Artist Statement:

“Stone Soup”is a multimedia project (digital collage, found materials collage, and hand bound book) that retells the European folk tale of the same name. The original folk tale is usually interpreted as a trickster tale, where the woman tricks the villagers into feeding her and her family. However, I take issue with that interpretation and instead argue that it is a story about the power, and the magic, of mutual aid. I deliberately left the figures expressionless and only created them from simple sketch lines so that the viewer can easily insert themselves into the world of the story. There will come a time when every one of us will find ourselves hungry, in need of help, in the cold, in the dark. As you engage with the story I invite you to reflect on how we can call upon the power of community now so that it will come to our aid when we need it the most.

If after engaging with this piece you feel called to donate even a few dollars to their organization (but cannot purchase the artwork itself), please visit foodnotbombs.net or donate directly on Venmo @worldfoodnotbombs

Please note that computer monitors may impact the representation of color in a piece.
